Hello Empties and Forgettables :'(
Wow I'm already 3 days late to posting weekly. Guess I was too busy cry/sleeping. Anyway today's story is about how Like New almost got a song into an Animal Crossing game. And who knows? Now that it's spring, maybe I'll turn over a "Like New Leaf" and actually post on time. See what I did there?.. aw, forget it.
This story has been cobbled together from various posts on fan forums. I don't have all the receipts, but back before Animal Crossing: New Horizons dropped there were rumors circulating that Nintendo was going to break their rule regarding licensed music, and include a K.K. Slider cover of Something Something Something And Then You Die (Life, The Musical) (SSSATYD(LTM) for short) in the game. Likewise, Like New were also going to break their rule and license the song to Nintendo. How awesome would that have been?! We could have been arranging virtual furniture while listening to K.K SOMETHINGx3. As far as I'm aware this is as close as we've ever gotten to an Official Like New cover.
Apparently, Jimmy Emptiness was a huge fan of K.K.'s and had even cited "K.K. Lament" as one of his favorite songs to cry to. This could be a fabrication of the music industrial complex; Jimmy has never gone on the record even acknowledging the existence of bands other than Like New. This is in part how they avoided any legal action by the various "copy-cat" bands that preceded them.
Anynew, the story goes that on the day they were to ink the contracts, Jimmy insisted on meeting K.K. Slider before signing, and when the Nintendo lawyers told Jimmy that would be impossible, he stormed out of the meeting, walking away from the deal. The same source of this story also claims that there was a full-length draft of the song completed at that time that got left on the cutting room floor, never to be heard by anyone.
Now dear reader, I was once like you believing there was no way I would ever be lucky enough to hear this recording. I had even started to doubt its existence. But after hours of reaching out on the darkest corners of the Like New Web a mysterious user sent me the goods. And today I'm gonna share them with you:
Who's to say whether parts of this story are completely real or true, but that sure as stuff sounds like the real K.K. Slider. I imagine if the deal had gone through they would polished the recording even more. That said, this is a heckin' amazing cover!! I can't stop crying when I listen to it in the car on my cassette deck. They should make some sort of wipers for the inside of the windshield to wipe away my tears ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Truly Jimmy E. and Mr. Slider were kindred spirits. I want to share one of my favorite K.K. Slider quotes. It's so core to what I love about Like New and really all music. I can almost hear Jimmy Emptiness saying it himself:

404 Band Not Found
For YEARS the Like New fan-base has been holding their collective breaths for a possible Like New re-reunion. There were countless rumors surrounding the fifteen-year anniversary tour: Leaked re-masters; never-before-seen BTS footage; never-before-seen BTS BTS footage where Jimmy thought he was meeting BTS backstage cause a documentarian used the initialism "BTS". And still there's silence.
Like New is my favorite band! Jimmy Emptiness is so cool! And what I wouldn't give to be Owen Forgetit (Pronounced "forget it" 🙄; grow up!) so I could be close to Jimmy! I would die! And Justin Tears! His drumming was just so empty sometimes it's like "is he even drumming on this track?".
Anyway, I'm starting this website to consolidate all the little scraps and shreds that have been released over the years. Maybe Jimmy will see this and realize it's time to fill our hearts with emptiness all over again!
I'll be scouring the myriad forums for new, old, or like new like new content. If you find any plz dm me on the forums! I have the same handle everywhere, except the official "ListenLikeNew.net" where I had to append '91' to my handle.
